ZEBRE is seeking to build the Wagga North Battery Energy Storage System at the Wagga Wagga Special Activation Precinct (SAP), near Byrnes Road, Bomen.
The proposed 105 MW/420MWh battery will have the capacity to provide the equivalent power for up to 35,000 NSW homes and businesses with renewable energy.
The project will also support growth in local electricity demand and defer the need for electricity network upgrades, positioning Wagga Wagga at the forefront of sustainable energy solutions.
ZEBRE is committed to delivering a Community Benefits Scheme that includes funding for local issues and prioritises other benefits, such as local procurement and employment. We are seeking community feedback to ensure the design and operation of the project reflects local needs.
Our team is collaborating closely with NSW regulatory authorities associated with the SAP in the development process.
The project is at an early stage of development.
We have submitted a scoping report to the NSW Department of Planning and are now preparing a development application.
In parallel, ZEN will submit an Activation Precinct Certificate application to ensure compliance with Special Activation Precinct (SAP) guidelines and principles.
Following initial feedback from Transgrid, ZEN is preparing a grid connection application which involves detailed modelling of the project within the electricity network, expected to be submitted in the first half of 2025.
A development application will soon be submitted and it is anticipated that a decision will be made by the NSW Government in the second half of 2025.
Approval to connect to the grid would then follow development consent, leading to construction commencing in early 2026.
All going well, the project could be operational in 2028.
